Metalmarks (Riodinidae)

The Riodinidae encompasses three subfamilies, 146 genera, and over 1,500 species. The majority of species are Neotropical, although some inhabit the Nearctic and the Palearctic. Metalmarks are found in a variety of habitats, but are most diverse in the wet tropical forests of South America. The family includes small to medium-sized butterflies (wingspan 12-60 mm) varying widely in colour and pattern. Males have reduced front legs. The vernacular "metalmarks" refers to the small metallic wing spots. Adults obtain nutrients and minerals from rotting fish and other carrion, but also flowers, damp sand, and mud puddles. The larvae feed on plants from at least 40 families, although some are predatory. The caterpillars of many species are covered in extensive setae.
